What is whiplash?

Whiplash is a neck injury that occurs when the muscles and ligaments in your neck are stretched too far or too quickly. The most common cause of whiplash is a car accident: up to 83% of people involved in a collision may develop symptoms as a result.

Common symptoms are:

  • a dull headache that gets sharper with head movement
  • tension headaches
  • dizziness or nausea
  • Jaw pain (TMJ)

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience signs of a more serious injury, such as a severe or unusual headache, vertigo, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, or tingling and weakness in your arms, hands, or face.

Treatment for whiplash:

Early and appropriate treatment is essential to reduce the risk of long-term symptoms and osteoarthritis. Treatment may include taking regular periods of rest and temporarily avoiding strenuous activity.

During the first few days, you can apply ice for 10 to 15 minutes every hour; after that, heat may help relieve the pain. A neck brace is not recommended unless your healthcare provider specifically advises it.
