What is a hernia?

Your spine is made up of vertebrae. The vertebrae are small bones with soft, spongy discs between them. These intervertebral discs allow for smooth movement and absorb shocks. Each disc has a soft, gel-like center surrounded by a strong outer ring.

If the outer ring tears, the soft core can partially bulge out. This is called a herniated disc. If this occurs in a disc in your neck, it is called a cervical disc herniation . If it occurs in the lower back, it is called a lumbar disc herniation .

At Chiropractie Move in The Hague, we regularly see patients with herniated disc symptoms in the neck or lower back.

What causes a hernia?

Usually, this is caused by prolonged overloading of a specific disc, often because the vertebrae above and below it are not moving enough. As a result, that one area in your neck or back has to do all the work, which can eventually become too much.

Hernia symptoms:

• Pijn in de nek of rug
• Uitstralende pijn naar schouder of arm of naar jouw been of voet.
• Tintelingen of een doof gevoel in arm, hand, been of voet.

The pain varies from person to person, sometimes it is dull and difficult to pinpoint, while at other times it is sharp and burning in one specific spot.

Can a herniated disc heal on its own?

Yes, the disc has the ability to heal itself. By reducing the strain, for example through chiropractic treatment and by restoring proper movement in your neck or back, you give your body the opportunity to heal. At Chiropractie Move in The Hague, we tailor the treatment to your specific needs.
