What is a chiropractic manipulation?

A chiropractic manipulation is a specific, controlled manual technique in which a chiropractor applies a short, targeted impulse to a joint. This technique is most commonly applied to the spine, but it can also be used on other joints.

The purpose of a joint manipulation is to improve the mobility of a joint and support normal movement. The technique is tailored to your body, your symptoms, and the findings from the physical examination.

During a chiropractic joint manipulation, a brief cracking or popping sound may sometimes occur. This sound is caused by a rapid change in pressure within the joint.

A joint manipulation is just one of the techniques that may be used in chiropractic care. Depending on your individual situation, treatment may also include mobilizations, other manual techniques, exercises, and advice on movement and load management.

Is a manipulation painful?

A joint manipulation is a brief and controlled technique. Most people experience no pain during the treatment, although you may feel pressure, stretching, or movement. After the treatment, there may sometimes be mild temporary tenderness or muscle soreness.

At Chiropractie Move, we discuss what we are going to do with you beforehand and tailor the treatment to your individual situation and comfort. You are always in control of your treatment.

Why is manipulation used?

A chiropractic manipulation may be used when a joint is not moving as well as it could or when the body’s movement pattern indicates that it may be beneficial. By applying targeted manual techniques, we aim to support movement and function of the musculoskeletal system.

At Chiropractie Move, we always look at the body’s overall movement pattern. A correction therefore does not stand alone, but may be part of a broader treatment approach that can also include movement, exercises, and advice.
